Chapter 7
Two lonely persons, one kind of feeling.
Fang Qi tossed and turned in her warm blankets. She missed the guy who tucked her into bed every night and told her how much he loves her as she felt his warm big hands on hers.
Where is he now? Jake..Jake…her mind ran wild with thoughts. She wished that he were here with her right now. Since the day he left, she still could not make herself forget him despite the pain he had caused her. Even till now. So where is he now? Is he also thinking of her in a faraway country from Singapore? Perhaps. Perhaps not. She smiled bitterly to herself as she turned to face the cold wooden floor, dragging her fingers up and down in vertical motion on the floor. Coldness hit and triggered the numbness of her fingers.
Against the first sign of daybreak, her mouth uttered a word. “Jake.” All she could say was his name. Jake. She couldn’t bear to sleep. Or rather, she couldn’t get to sleep. No matter how warm her blankets are, they can never be compared to the warmth Jake gave her. She loves him yet she can’t be with him.
Ha! What a life?
Wei Lian opens his eyes and pushes away the thick blanket from his body. The cold wind made the wind chimes hanging by the windows chirp and clatter. He sits upright against the wall and listens to the soft music the wind chime is creating.
“Ding, ding, ding….” The tingling melody against the cold and windy weather is soothing to his ears. Is it raining outside again? Somehow, rainy nights seem to calm his senses and strangely inspire him.
“Dunno can write my song or not?” He stoned for a while and decided to get out of bed after all. He has not been able to sleep well lately. The usual nagging feeling surfaced in his heart again. Though he could not see, he quietly wished that daybreak would come soon.
He picked up his guitar from beside the bed, and began strumming a few chords. He started to work on his unfinished song. In the wee hours of the morning, his inspiration was running high. As the sun-rays glowed upon daybreak, Wei Lian finally completed the new song. He hears birds chirping outside. He felt his way from the edge of the bed, along the soft paddings he had fixed on the walls all the way to the window and pushed open the closed window. A moist woody smell greeted him.
It’s morning, he realized. He could feel the faint touch of warmth from the sunlight on the back of his hand.
Knock knock! Wei Lian heard a loud knock on the door. He raised his eyebrow with frustration. Who is that so early in the morning? His fingers quickly opened the flap of his Braille watch and felt the tiny Braille dots on the watch surface. 7.15am!! Err..who is that lay?
He opened the door and heard a female voice. The female voice said, “Can I stay here for a few days?”
“Huh?” He was sure he didn’t hear wrongly. It’s the same voice that he remembered hearing. Fang Qi.
“I am saying can I stay here for a few days?” the voice said again.
“Can I say no a not?” he held onto the door, afraid that she will just dash in suddenly.
“Cannot. Let me stay here for a few days, I don’t want to go home.” Fang Qi looked at him through the partially closed door.
“But you don’t want to go home like not my business lay?” Wei Lian replied in an impatient tone.
Before Wei Lian could react, Fang Qi pushed the door open and slipped into the house. “Let me stay a few days, I will leave you alone. I won’t disturb you. I will leave soon.” She plonked herself down onto the sofa and said.
“Eh, you…” Wei Lian was thrown off for a while and then he turned in the direction of the sofa.
“Eh.” No response. “Eh!!!”
“I sleep for a while” Fang Qi mumbled out of frustration and grabbed a soft cushion, burying her face into it.
Huh? What’s wrong with this woman? He and she hardly know each other and all they knew about each other is that they have started off on a wrong note right from the beginning. All he knows is that this girl is his good friend’s sister. Hai! Whatever la, let her sleep first. He will think of what to do with her when he wakes up later. He felt weird with someone suddenly intruding into his own privacy. But he was seriously tired. Without thinking too much, he felt his way back to the bed and fell into deep sleep.
