Chapter 9
Meanwhile, Wei Lian had no choice but to allow Fang Qi to stay over at the beach house. “I like it here lay, cannot ah?” was her frequent retort. Cannot lor, he thought grudgingly, but he didn’t know how to chase her away. She is just so thick-skinned. And she is still so tight-lipped about why she is seeking refuge here, he gave up trying to find out from her. He had better things to do. He made her promise not to disturb him. As long as her presence doesn’t interfere with his song writing progress, he wasn’t going to bother too much.
It was a sunny yet breezy afternoon. Fang Qi has scooted off to the beach to get a suntan. Wei Lian sat on the sofa, his guitar snuggled close to himself. Finally some peace and quiet, he thought to himself, his fingers gently strumming some chords.
Before long, he was startled by the loud ringing tone of his handphone. “Private number”, the speech reader said. Wondering who it could be, he answered the phone. “Hello Wei Lian! It’s me ah, Jake. I’m back in Singapore. Where are you man?” “Wah you are finally back!” Wei Lian exclaimed. Jake is one of his closest cousins and they’ve been playmates since young. But Jake disappeared from Singapore four years ago, apparently due to some relationship problems. He has not told Wei Lian anything, and obviously Wei Lian wasn’t going to probe. Wei Lian told him that he was at his beach house, and Jake offered to come over to visit him, since he had also brought something back from overseas for him.
“Wah, not bad ah this place?” Jake walked around the beach house, admiring the cosy interior decorations. Wei Lian smiled. “Make yourself at home hor,” he gestured Jake towards the sofa and reached into the fridge for two packet drinks. He handed one to Jake and settled himself on the cool floor. The weather was too hot for him to be sitting on the sofa.
“So how come you decided to come back?” he asked Jake. “Well, I realised I missed everything back here lor. I miss you also ma, hahaha!” Jake slapped Wei Lian on his back playfully. The two cousins chatted like long-lost friends, catching up with what happened in the past few years.
“Waaaah!!!!!! So hot outside! I chao dar already!” Fang Qi barged into the house, squealing at the top of her voice. “Oei! You got any cold……..” Fang Qi suddenly stopped in her tracks. Silence. Jake? She couldn’t believe her eyes. She was too shocked to react. Jake was equally stunned. They both never expected to meet up again like that.
“Eh, why suddenly no sound? Became dumb liao ah?” Wei Lian sensed an awkward air in the room and he is a little puzzled. Fang Qi and Jake both cleared their throats uneasily. They both pretended that they did not know each other. “Iya you don’t disturb me la, I got visitor here. Go and eat dinner or do something else la. Bye!” Wei Lian didn’t bother introducing them to each other, and chased Fang Qi away. Fang Qi retreated a few steps, her gaze still on Jake, then turned and walked out of the beach house without another word. Wei Lian was baffled at Fang Qi’s sudden loss for words. Maybe she was shy because there was a stranger in the house. Huh, shy?! Err, oh well, whatever la, he could not be bothered with her. “Eh, let’s go for seafood at the restaurant nearby ok? Hungry already.” he suggested to Jake, who was strangely quiet as well.
The beach house was quiet that night as Wei Lian walked back to the beach house after dinner with Jake, who had excused himself saying he had to rush home. For the past few nights, Fang Qi has been blasting the TV so loudly that Wei Lian had to threaten to throw her out if she didn’t lower the volume. But tonight, the TV wasn’t turned on. Was she even in the house? Wei Lian pushed open the door and felt for the light switch. It was turned on.
“Wah somebody tonight very quiet lay. So rare, I can go and buy 4D already.” Wei Lian joked sarcastically. No response. “Haha I know liao, must be you talked too much until your mouth is tired.” Still no response. Weird. “Eh, you fainted ah?”
“Iya, sleeping liao la,” came a reluctant reply and Wei Lian heard her pull the blanket, probably over her head. He shrugged his shoulders. This girl is just weird. But he decided to keep quiet and not probe further. That’s not his style anyway. After a few days of interaction with Fang Qi, he roughly knew her mentality. If she wanted to tell him what happened, she will tell him voluntarily. There is no need for him to ask. He retrieved his guitar, turned off the lights and went out to the porch to continue working on his song.
Two days later, Wei Lian received a call from his mother asking him to go back for dinner as he hasn’t been home for quite a few days. When Fang Qi overheard his conversation she wanted to tag along.
“I ya, let me follow la, very boring lor stay here.” Fang Qi tugged at the long sleeve of his striped shirt.
“I ya, bring me along will die meh? Your parents won’t be mistaken I am your girlfriend also what. So scared meh?” she challenged.
Actually she wanted to tag along because she is afraid that Jake will come and look for her at the beach house. The other day when he was here, he looked at her with shock. She knew he would be back anytime as he did not call or question her ever since he left. She does not want to risk seeing him alone. She missed him so much yet she doesn’t know how to deal with facing him. She thickened her skin and turned to harassing Wei Lian as a last resort.
“Eh you can don’t keep pulling or not?” Wei Lian couldn’t stand her harassing anymore.
“I ya can la, can la, you let me follow you la ok?” Fang Qi decided for him.
“You said you like the beach house. Since you find it boring now, you leave la.” Wei Lian brushed her hands away and tried to walk past the makeshift dinning table but she stopped him. She hugged his arm, much to his resistance, and stared at him. “You are afraid people will be mistaken issit? Or you got something to hide?” she asked, all the while glaring at him.
“I ya you don’t bo liao la.” came Wei Lian’s curt reply.
“Then???” her voice raised by ten decibels. Iya whatever. Wei Lian wrestled his arm out of hers and walked out of the house. Fang Qi happily followed behind.
“Eh, you only child ah? You how old ah? What you work as one ah? You always hold the guitar and strum, looking for inspiration is it? Like that strum strum strum you will get inspiration ah?……”
Along the way, for the past one hour, Wei Lian was subjected to the bombarding of questions from Fang Qi.
“………….” Hai!
“………” Huh?
“………” What is she asking?
“………Hana hana ...” he answered for the sake of answering
“…….stop pulling me lay! Why you keep pushing over?” he pushes away her shoulder and listened to the messages coming into his handphone.
It’s not really Fang Qi’s intention to keep poking at Wei Lian, but she just couldn’t help but to irritate him. Every time she opens her mouth, she just feels like picking a squabble or quarrel with him. At least he was a worthy opponent, she chuckled subconsciously.
