Wei Lian raised his hands and felt the warmth on his face. He blinked his eyes feeling a very faint brightness. Stretching his arms, he felt his way up from the makeshift bed made up of a thin mattress, into the bathroom.
He squeezed some toothpaste onto the toothbrush and began washing up. Suddenly something struck him. There is supposed to be one more person. Where is she? He did not feel her presence in the room. I ya don’t care la. He began to enjoy the peacefulness around him. This is going to be a good day, he thought.
As he made his way slowly into the dining hall, his palms feeling the wall, he heard his mum laughing loudly. His back was struck with cold sweat. He stopped in his tracks, his palms against the wall, and his face with indifference.
“Auntie, I help you.”
“You like congee a not? Have some century eggs also. Still got bread and fried eggs and also baked potatoes.”
“Wah auntie, I love baked potatoes leh!”
“Really ah?! Ah boy loves baked potatoes also leh. And I made his favorite roasted wings also! Eh? He hasn’t wake up is it? Lunch time already leh. How can like that when got guests? That boy ah, I must scold him. Girl ah, you must forgive him hor, that boy is not good at expressing his feelings one hor. Which day he go and say I love you to you ah, you must tell me hor!” Wei Lian’s mum rattled on with laughter.
Oh my god. Wei Lian listened with his left palm slapping the wall surface weakly.
“Brother, you okay a not?” Jake asked from behind him.
“Huh? Okay ah.” He still faced the wall. He is trying to listen to what else Fang Qi and his mum are talking about.
“Kerry is a very nice girl.” Jake suddenly said.
Huh? Kerry? Who is….Fang Qi?
“Boy ah, come and eat la. Why are you standing there? The wall very nice to smell is it?” Wei Lian’s mum turned when she heard Jake’s voice. She made a dig at Wei Lian who is facing the wall.
Oh my god-what kind of mum is this? Wei Lian thought.
“Hi dearie!” Wei Lian’s waist suddenly got hugged. He smelt a sweet flowery fragrance coming from the hugger’s hair. Before he could react, the hugger’s lips pressed her lips down on his.
Huh??!! Oei! His face blushed furiously and he quickly brushed away the hands that hugged around his waist. “I yo! Can you don’t anyhow hug a not?” Fang Qi had timed the kiss such that only Jake could see. Auntie had her back turned as she was pouring coffee.
“Why cannot lay? Got your favorite baked potato and roasted chicken wings leh. Auntie made it specially for you.” Fang Qi’s arm auto locked with his, leading him to the dining table.
Wei Lian sat down with his arms crossed across his chest and kept silent. He hasn’t quite gotten over nor understood why Fang Qi had “attacked” him with the kiss.
Fang Qi started to get him his favorite roasted chicken wings and applied butter to the baked potato. But instead of allowing him to enjoy the taste of the spice-marinated roasted chicken wings, she de-boned the chicken wings to chicken shreds; mashed his baked potato into a gooey mush, stirred in a lot of chili sauce and pushed the plate of shredded chicken and mush in front of him.
Wei Lian heard the plate being placed in front of him and took a bite of the food. What the hell is this??! His tongue felt hot chili sauce and mush.
Fang Qi watched his facial expression change as he indifferently swallowed the glob of gooey mess. Oh sorry lor, but my kiss is not without a price. Who asked him to ignore her and slept through the night? She had kicked him numerous times till she thought she had kicked him to death. His unconsciousness scared her. It was later when she flipped him over did she realized that he was just too tired and slept right throughout.
“Auntie, your baked potato is very delicious, next time can teach me?”
“The coffee is very fragrant also, what kind of coffee beans did you use?”
Being smart and sharp, Wei Lian’s mother could see through immediately that Fang Qi is trying to irritate her son. This son of hers must have done something to irritate her. Oh good luck son, forgive your mum, me, for playing along. This is pretty fun! Hardly does she get to see her son being played back. This should teach him how to curb his bad temper.
And all this while, Jake was watching his ex-girlfriend. His heartless departure had turned her into a gambler and made her acquire bad habits. His heart sank watching her behave with such a radically different personality from her original sweet and caring self. And why was she with Wei Lian? He hadn’t talked to her since the day he met her at the beach house. And she was obviously avoiding him. Before he could even think of how to approach her, she had followed Wei Lian back to the beach house.
