As they headed towards her Ah Ma’s house, Fang Qi was still reminding Wei Lian on her likes and dislikes. She was afraid Wei Lian would sabotage her at the last minute. He had been looking pre-occupied since he woke up.
“Ah Ma!!!” Fang Qi shrieked and hugged her grandma as she opened the door to welcome their arrival. “Good girl good girl!” Ah Ma beams widely, lifting her head to take a good look at her visitor. “Ah Ma, this is my boyfriend Wei Lian,” Fang Qi introduced. “Hello Ah Ma. How are you?” Wei Lian spoke in a jovial manner without even flinching. “Actor. Not bad.” Fang Qi thought quietly.
“Ah…Wei Lian ah. Come come, come in and take a seat,” Ah Ma took Wei Lian’s hand and led him into the living room. She was a little surprised as she quickly discovered that Wei Lian is actually visually handicapped. He sure looks very normal if you didn’t know him.
As expected, Ah Ma started to casually ask Wei Lian many questions about Fang Qi throughout their conversation. He took the questions at ease, and to Fang Qi’s surprise, there were some questions that he could actually answer even when she had not told him.
“Ah girl sometimes loves to take her own sweet time. Especially when she is bathing. How long you take ah, girl?” Ah Ma purposely fielded this question. This was a well-known fact in their family that Fang Qi hogs the bathroom all the time. “Yalor! She takes about one and a half hours in the bathroom and always sings loudly inside too!” Wei Lian chipped in. Ha, this is easy, his observation skills are excellent, and based on her stay at the beach house for the past week, he could say he knew her living habits inside out.
Ah Ma smiled approvingly, and fielded her final question. “Why do you like her?”
“Ah Ma, to me, love doesn’t need a reason. Happiness is not whether a person loves me or not, what matters is that I love her. She is my happiness.” Wei Lian held Fang Qi’s hand tightly as he said that in all earnestness.
Hai! What more can she ask? Fang Qi’s Ah Ma looked very satisfied with this simple yet sincere answer. But to further confirm her suspicions, she walked out on the pretext of cooking a great meal for them and hid behind the door for awhile.
“Wah so solid leh you!” Fang Qi leaned close to Wei Lian and whispered into his ears. It could be the warmth radiating from Wei Lian or for some strange reason, Fang Qi suddenly came even closer and wrapped her arms around his waist. Ahh! Warmth. She likes the warm feeling that Wei Lian emits. It made her feel comfortable.
Feeling her hug, Wei Lian’s head lowered out of natural response. His lips brush against her forehead. Then before they knew it, they are locked in a passionate kiss. It just came so naturally.
Fang Qi’s Ah Ma saw it and grinned to herself. She isn’t so stupid. She could tell they are faking an act in front of her. She wondered if she should be glad that she had such a clever granddaughter. Fang Qi thought she will be able to fool her grandma but her Ah Ma thinks otherwise.
Instead she feels that Fang Qi is definitely going to be in for a hard time this time round, judging from the way they kissed. She quietly crept away into the kitchen and began to whip up Fang Qi’s favourite dishes.
“Eh, sorry sorry…” Wei Lian pulled away first, his face hot with flush. What the hell is he doing? This is the second time he is behaving illogically with Fang Qi. “Ah. Sorry also.” Fang Qi said too, in a strangely coy manner. No, they didn’t plan for that scene.
After lunch at Ah Ma’s house, Wei Lian went off to meet Cherie, without knowing that Fang Qi was actually following him behind. Fang Qi was curious about Wei Lian and Cherie.
She didn’t know Cherie that well but she figured she must be someone really special to be able to make Wei Lian so devoted to her. A person who is usually so indifferent to the happenings in life but whose face clearly lights up upon the mention of his loved one, she has got to be really special.
On the other hand, Fang Qi also felt weirdly worried about Wei Lian as he has been looking pre-occupied until he met her Ah Ma and yet could so easily get into character to help fool her Ah Ma. This guy must be hiding all his feelings inside him.
When Wei Lian arrived at Café Mocha Love, Cherie was already seated in the usual booth where Jason, Wei Lian and herself used to occupy. Nothing much has changed except that the café had been given a fresh coat of paint.
“Wei Lian, over here!” Cherie called out. Wei Lian gave a smile of acknowledgement and walked at ease to the booth without any help. He has been there so often that he can maneuver every corner by himself.
“Hello hello.” Wei Lian was at a loss for words. “Er, how have you been? I…I…We have been thinking about you,” referring to Jason and himself. He is unsure of what Cherie is thinking and he is unwilling to say anything to jeopardize their friendship. Although deep down inside, he still has hopes that Cherie would give him a chance.
“I’ve been fine. Actually, the reason why I came back is…because I can’t forget certain things that happened.” Cherie started and trailed off. Wei Lian's heart did a somersault. He doesn’t know if she had looked up Jason yet, but his heart was filled with overwhelming optimism. He tilted his face in Cherie’s direction and waited.
“It’s been four years since I’ve left and frankly, I still have not gotten over how I feel for Jason. The reason why I’m back is because of Jason.” Cherie’s frank confession cut Wei Lian like a newly sharpened knife.
The pain and disappointment written all over Wei Lian’s face escaped Cherie’s notice as he bent down to take a sip from his ice-coffee. The ice was melting quickly and the coffee tasted diluted. He continued drinking from the straw in all concentration.
Finally he looked up and said to Cherie, “Actually, the day that you left….Jason realised that he had fallen for you long ago.” He had to tell Cherie the truth regardless how badly he was hurting inside. After all, he had always wanted her to be happy. This time was no different.
Silence. Then Cherie gave a bitter laugh. “Haha. Don’t try to console me la. I know how Jason is. If he liked me, I would have felt it.” “It’s true, Cherie. Jas couldn’t eat for days after you left because he realised the hurt he had caused you. And that he loves you too. He has been waiting for you to come back lor.” Wei Lian tried to convince her.
“I don’t believe. Unless….you help me test him.” Cherie challenged. It’s not that she doesn’t believe Wei Lian, but she felt that maybe Wei Lian was just trying to help her and Jason get together. “Ok lor,” was Wei Lian’s answer. What could he do? He decided it was better to have two happy persons than three unhappy persons.
Fang Qi sat in the booth behind theirs, hands clutched tightly around her mug of cappuccino. Why is this guy so stupid?? He loves Cherie so much but he still wants to help her get together with another guy?
From the small glass pane that separated the two booths, Fang Qi could see the pained and hurt expression on Wei Lian’s face. His downcast look made her want to go over and hug him. Huh, hug him? Fang Qi, you must have nothing better to do! She chided herself and quietly left her seat to make payment at the counter. She could not bear to listen to the rest of their conversation.
