At the turn of the doorknob, Fang Qi quickly picked up the packet of half eaten potato chips and started to pretend to munch. She had been staring into space since she returned to the beach house from the café. “Wah, you finally back from your hot date ah?” she said out loud to Wei Lian. No answer.
“Eh, why? So hot until you cannot talk issit?” she taunted him.
“What la?” Wei Lian wondered if he detected a hint of jealousy in her tone. Can’t be. This woman just wants to irritate him despite him helping her this morning. Ingrate.
“What, what? Your hot date with your Cherie mah! People ask you out you agree immediately, I ask you to help me with something small, I have to beg you until I go on my knees!!” Fang Qi shrieked at the top of her voice, unable to control herself.
“Who are you la? You think you are really my girlfriend meh?!!” Wei Lian raised his voice back at her. This woman is really testing my patience!
Hearing no response, he continued,” You think I really want to help you? If you are not Fang Tong’s sister, I can’t be bothered about you man. You think you really very attractive meh? No wonder Jake dumped you last time! You think I like you to stay here meh? I pity you only!” The hurtful words just came out in a rush from Wei Lian’s mouth. He was already hurting inside and Fang Qi ended up as his punching bag.
Before Wei Lian could even regret what he said, Fang Qi grabbed her bag and ran out of the beach house, slamming the door behind her. Her face was wet with tears.
Fang Qi wandered aimlessly on the streets, her tear-stained face quickly drying up in the humid night. She had been walking for the past few hours and it was already 2am in the morning.
Her blood was still boiling from the fiery exchange she had with Wei Lian just now. How dare he scold me and hurl all those verbal abuses against me? She cursed under her breath, kicking the litter on the floor. She had to kick something when she was angry. Bad habit.
Nobody has ever shouted at me like that! She thought furiously, this time kicking the empty dustbin in front of her, sending the dustbin tumbling down the road.
“Iyo!” A matronly voice called out. Fang Qi looked up in shock. Who was on the street at this time of the night with her? She peered down the street and saw a big figure wobbling towards her direction.
“Wah, miss ah, I collect soft drink cans but you kick dustbins ah?” the voice asked. As the figure moved under the street lights, Fang Qi saw a rotund old lady dressed in a big polka dotted dress with something that looked like a shower cap on her head. The fat old lady was holding a transparent trash bag with several flattened soft drink cans in it.
“Wah, this ah ma looks so weird and she’s collecting soft drink cans at this hour? Must be a bit crazy one.” Fang Qi thought to herself, wondering if she should turn and run away. “Luckily the streets got no cats, dogs or beggar leh, if not maybe all kena langga by you already. Die also dunno what happened.” The old lady joked and chuckled heartily. Fang Qi decided this old lady seems humorous and harmless and since she was bored and had nowhere to go, she started to make conversation with her.
“So, who are you ah?” Fang Qi casually asked. “Ohhh, I’m Honey. The little bunny. Hahahahaha!” The fat old lady laughed at her own joke, her double chin wobbling mercilessly. Fang Qi laughed for the first time in the past twelve hours. “Wah, you smile already ah? Just now your face was really black leh. Somebody made you angry ah?” The old lady asked.
Fang Qi took the chance to voice out the unhappiness she had been swallowing for the past few hours. “Ya la! I quarrelled with a friend lor!!” she exclaimed and started cursing and swearing. The fat old lady looked at Fang Qi with a queer look. “Why you look at me like that?” Fang Qi wasn’t done with her complaining.
“Iyo, wah…this friend of yours so important to you until you must kick the dustbin until it roll onto the road ah? Luckily it didn’t kill me leh!” The fat old lady laughed again. “so important to you…..so important to you….so important to you…” the words stuck in Fang Qi’s head. She could no longer hear the old lady’s chatter nor laughter. All she could hear was her own furiously beating heart. She has fallen for Wei Lian. And she could no longer deny it.
